Started in 2001, the Dot NAME generic domain extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are known by. Initially, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to reserve john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level names remained operational.
